Blog Assignment #8

My experience using a blog was a mixture. First, it was time consuming and hard to sign up until I asked my daughter for help.   After I figured out, I really enjoyed sharing with the classmates about different topics. It was interesting to know what your classmates knew and hear their experiences.    I really enjoyed seeing a lot of creativity in some of the classmates’ posts.   I enjoyed many of the topics, particularly in hearing the different techniques used by classmates for stress reduction. I ended up learning a lot from others through the blogs. I also love to hear about the language of love, marriage experts, and kids off drugs.  Regarding if I will continue using a blog, well, I don’t think I will continue using it solely for socializing, due that I am very busy unless it is related to homework.

Blog Assigment #7 Book Review

Book Review “My First Impressions “

I read the book, “Food Rules,” by Michael Pollan. I chose this book because it was recommended to me by a doctor of the Health Department here at Palomar College. When the book was recommended, I expected to get clear and practical answers regarding eating healthier and cutting bad habits in my diet. The book is very fun, short, and simple and easily read within an hour. It gives us useful tips that can be applied to our lifestyle by eating the best.  While reading the book, what really stood out to me were the simple and straightforward tips that the book had written in it.  The book is divided into 64 principles very easy to understand and that we are already familiar with.  I also like that the book is broken down into three sections. Each section includes rules that we need to use in order to eat healthier. These are some of the main rules suggested in the book:
Part I.
What Should I eat?
Don’t eat anything that your great- grandmother won’t recognize as food.”
Avoid foods products that not ordinary human will keep in the pantry.”
Avoid food that contains High fructose corn syrup.”
Avoid foods products containing ingredients that a third graded cannot pronounce.”
Avoid foods that you see advertised in television.”
"Eat foods that eventually will rot.”
"Buy at the farmers market.”
It is not food if it arrives through the window of your car.”

Part II
What kind of food should I eat?  (Mostly plants)
"Eat mostly plants, especially leaves.”
"Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk.”
“Drink the spinach water.”
“Eat animals that have, themselves, eaten well.”
“Eat organic”
“Eat sweet foods as you find them in nature.”
“The whiter the bread, the sooner you’ll be dead.”
“Favor the kind of oils and grains that have traditionally been stone ground.”
Part III
How Should I eat? (Not too much)
 “Eat less.”
"Eat slowly.”
"Serve proper portions and don’t go for seconds.”
“Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored.”
"Limit your snacks to unprocessed plant foods.”
"Plant a vegetable garden.”

The impact the book made on me was inspirational and motivating. It pushes me to improve the quality of my life and health through the foods I eat.  “Foods Rule” gave me the power to make changes and to help me get on the right track to healthier eating. Definitely, I highly recommend this book because it gave me practical tips to cut off bad eating behaviors and it is a great guide to adopt some good habits to practice.

Assigment #6 Kids Off Drugs

Assignment #6

Kids off Drugs

What can I do as parent to help prevent my children from drug use?

First things that I do as parent is create an open, honest atmosphere in my home. Have plenty of time to talk and share with them and giving them love, support and protection.  They know that they can come and trust me to talk about anything.

I have three children and Since my children were little, I have been talk to them about why not to use drugs and how harmful and dangerous drugs can be in all the aspects of health, and many consequence can occur in many ways like social emotional, financial and family. I have been told them to learn to say NO if peer pressure occurs.

Another positive thing to do to keep children off drugs  it is to keep my children busy in after school activities, like sports music, art, etc, and I try to be involved in their activities and get to know who their friends and families are.

Definitely, education, communication and constantly love and care are primordial to help children to stay away of drugs. Hi Ashley,

#5   Marriage over 20 years

I have been married for 19 years and dating with my husband for one and half year, so I consider being together with my husband for more than 20 years.

One of our challenges in our marriage was being born and raised in different countries. My husband is from the USA and I am from Mexico. We don’t carry the same traditions or cultures. Since we don’t speak the same native language, miscommunication has created misunderstanding and conflict many times.  Another challenge at the beginning of our marriage was that since we both have significant differences in culture, family values and how to raise our children, many difficult situations arose in our marriage. The way my husband and I resolved these differences were by  respecting each others’ cultures, family values and traditions; even if we don’t agree with them some of this believes, we adjust to both cultures with caring and respect, we accept each others’ differences and moved on in our lives always finding the best for our marriage.   I guess one of our advices for a healthy marriage is to always respect each other.  After 20 years together,  we have been enriched with the mixture of cultures and enjoy the benefit of the two different worlds.

Things that have helped us to be successful in our lives are mutual respect, commitment, a family-comes-first attitude, accepting each other for who we are and love.

Assignment # 3

 Stress Reduction

Gardening is my stress reducer.

Gardening creates a better environment. I always have felt fascinated of the miracles that gardening does in my body, mind and soul.  I love to garden and use it to relax for my health. When I am in the garden, seeing the plants and the colorful flowers gives me a pleasant and serene feeling.

The technique I use in the garden is walking around the garden and spending quality amount of time observing the texture of the flowers and the life of the animals. I focus on the beauty, design and powerful colors, I smell the fragrances of the flowers and I hear the buzzing of bees and butterflies and the chirping of birds that are around the garden. I inhale the fragrances of the garden in deeply. Then I continue with another flower and observe and admire the unique and beauty of each of the flowers. Then I stretch and relax. At the end of my walk in the garden, I always felt relaxed with a sense of peace. Gardens and plants help me to get energy from the greens. It is a magical and powerful benefit to have plants, and it relaxes my mind and gives me happiness on how magical nature is.  The garden creates a comforting atmosphere, helps me to appreciate life, and disconnects me from my busy life, worries, and stress. I love gardening flowers, and I highly recommend that everyone begins to enjoy the magic of nature.

“Food Inc”.

The movie “Food Inc” is an overview of how the food production works in the United States these days.  There are a few big corporations who have control of the entire farming production in this country. They produce food in massive production in a short time period by adding preservatives and pesticides to the products , by feeding the cows corn instead of grass as cheaper food, by using ammonia to clean the meat, by growing animals in terrible conditions, and by treating workers unfairly and  putting our health in big risk.

Something that impacts me the most is how the chickens and cows stand for their entire life in tiny spaces where they are unable to move. The chickens don’t have light so they can sleep and eat more for faster grow, then, the animals are slaughtered right away for business purpose, having a miserable life. The movie shows how chickens die constantly for the inability of exercise that even the owner of the coop was getting sick, because of exposure to the unhealthy conditions of the chicken coops.

My biggest concern and what worried me the most, is that our health is jeopardized when we continue eating everything that is available at markets and restaurants without knowing where they come from. In the movie, we saw that many corporations used pesticides to kill other herbs, put many preservatives and trans fat in food so that it wouldn’t go bad, used corn syrup on many products as a cheap substitute for sugar, and used ammonia to package the meat so it would be clean.  These actions are causing many health issues among the public. We have already seen that people are paying consequences with more health issues than ever before like obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressures, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more. The part of the movie that had the biggest impact on me was the case of the child who died by eating a burger that wasn’t cleaned properly, as well as the many cases of E-coli that we see in the news all the time, and the obesity and health issues that arise from unhealthy eating.

It is important to change our behaviors in our lifestyle by being conscious of what we eat. We need to go back to traditional diets and cook more at home, eat seasonal foods, buy from local farmers, grow our own vegetables, and avoid fast food and packaged foods that that may carry many chemicals and preservatives that will harm our health.

I definitely recommend this movie to everyone and urge them on the importance of caring for our health by making responsible choices in what we buy, and what we eat.
